Is this correct: running git lfs install in any folder installs some needed settings to global gitconfig file. In addition to that repository needs to have git hooks for post-checkout, post-commit, post-merge and pre-push?

LFS stores binary files in a separate file system. When you clone a repository, you only download the latest copies of the binary files and not every single changed version of them.
